Backup Hyper-V Guest von SMB/SOFS Share failed: 0x80070005

I have trouble to backup Hyper-V Guests which I moved to a SMB/"Scale out File Server (SOFS)" Share. We are running Windows Server 2012 on the Hyper-V Hosts and on the SOFS Nodes. For Backup we are using DPM 2012 SP1. DPM Agents are rolled out to all of the envovled Nodes. "Normal" Backup of Files on the SOFS Nodes is ok ... e.g. Backup of c:\temp.

Initiating a Consistency Check in the DPM Console reports the following messages on the SOFS Nodes:

We've recently installed DPM 2012 R2. For some reason, we can no longer take online backups of virtual machines in our Hyper-V cluster. When we try to create a new group, we only see Offline\<ComputerName>.

I originally thought it was an issue with the virtual machine being a Dynamic disk. However, I've since converted the disk to fixed and reinstalled the DPM agent. I still only see the Offline option.

Has anyone else experienced this issue? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hyper-V Cluster Backup problem: Unexpected failure. Error code: 48F@01000003

We have several 2012R2 datacenter Hyper-V hosts with several CSV's to a HP 3PAR FC SAN, managed with SCVMM 2012R2 and backed up with DPM 2012R2. We have been running fine and doing backups with agents in each VM.

All hosts are regularly updated with Cluster Aware Updating.

Recently I thought I'd set up Hyper-V host backups because I hope it will make DPM easier to manage, and I believe it uses far less bandwidth and I/O's. Initially, I selected about 15 vm's to backup from the cluster node in DPM. This managed to crash 2 hosts and I've searched everywhere for a solution. One link suggested it is a 3PAR ODX issue, but I disabled ODX by this:

http://flemmingriis.com/dpm-2012-r2-windows-server-2012-r2-disable-odx/ and the issue persists.

Specifically, the error is: Event 1 VDS Basic Provider, Unexpected failure. Error code: 48F@01000003.

These occur several times then the CSV goes offline and all the VM's crash. Needless to say, this is catastrophic and a bullet proof solution needs to be found.

I'd appreciate any help :)

Change Tracking has been marked inconsistent due to one of the following reasons
1. Unexpected shutdown of the protected server
2. Unforeseen issue in DPM Bitmap failover during cluster failover of one or more datasources sharing the tracked volume. (ID 30501 Details: Unknown error (0xe0062000) (0xE0062000))

I am backing up windows server 2012 8 node hyper-v cluster using CSV. DPM is a 2012 sp1 client. Guest have not migrated and constantly receiving error.

If i run a consistency check backups will complete, but trying to prevent the problem.

Any suggested troubleshooting?

Hanging jobs will not abort, why the other VM's couldn't be backuped

Hi

We are using DPM 2012 in an Hyper-V Cluster environment with Windows Server 2012 Servers.

The DPM is backing up all the VMs we have. There are something about 50 VMs which should be protected by DPM.

Since a few days we have the issue, that the backups are taking much longer than before. Our DPM is configured to maximum allow one job per Clusternode and per Cluster-Shared-Volume (CSV). When I check our backup the next morning, there are every day 5 different VMs which are backing up for 8 - 9 hours! Usualy the DPM backup will need some few minutes to complete the backup uf 1 VM. When I cancel this jobs manualy, the other jobs are processed very fast and I can resume the abortet jobs, which also will finish very fast.

Is there a possiblity to cancel jobs which are taking longer than e.g. 1 hour to backup? Maybe by powershell? This would help me solving my issue for the moment.

Thank you for your help!

Hi,

We was upgraded to DPM 2012 SP1 (Ver: 4.1.3417.0) from DPM 2012 Rollup 3 (Ver: 4.0.1920.0).

Now we cannot backup any VMs on Servers running 2012 OS or 2012 R2.

The first server, OS: 2012, file system: NTFS, second server OS: 2012 R2, file system ReFs.

Thanks,

DPM 2012 R2

Server 2012 R2 and Server 2012 (R1). Both CSV volumes and Hyper-V hosts with non clustered volumes.

ISCSI Attached Storage. (Nimble SAN)

Every time a VM backup is made this error message occurs:

"'SERVERNAME' failed to perform the operation. The virtual machine is not in a valid state to perform the operation. (Virtual machine ID "GUID")"

The backup seems to finish fine most of the time, but it also seems to be causing some VM's to be in a hung/frozen state when this happens.

Implementing PaaS (CloudFoundry/BOSH) feeds a huge number of (unwanted) ProtectionServers into DPM

Hi

We have a Hyper-v cluster with VM's on Cluster Shared Volumes, we are using System Center (2012 R2) VMM and DPM for backing up the core infrastructure and a selection of vm's from some of our VMM clouds.

Ongoing work is to implement a PaaS with Hyper-V/System Center - with use of CloudFoundry/BOSH. Due to a lot of unity tests many short lived vm's are made that we never want to backup with DPM. It looks like that the DPM Agent on the Hyper-v hosts in the cluster feeds all vm's that it sees into DPM as a ProtectionServer - even though these VM's do not have any DPM Agent installed.

Doing this SQL in the DPM Database:

SELECT count(*) FROM [DPMDB_MyDPM].[dbo].[vw_DPM_Server]

Gives 5531 entires. A huge number of these entires are from the PaaS CloudFoundry/Bosh created VM's in the IaaS. These are VM's that never have been backed up by DPM (Or have any DPM agent installed).

We see the same with use of powershell:

PS C:\> $ps = Get-ProductionServer | Where-Object {$_.Name -like "*bosh_vm_being_created*"}
PS C:\> $ps.length
5294
PS C:\>

* The huge number of (unwanted) Production Servers in our DPM causes that our DPM is going slower and slower. And we see that our DPM SQL Database is working more and more. Today we are only taking backup of around 20 VM's, the SystemCenter MSSQL and a few hosts with DPM agent.

Question 1 - How can we remove these unwanted ("bosh_vm_being_created") ProductionServers from our DPM? They do not have any DPM agent installed, they have no recovery point in DPM. But still they are listed in DPM as a ProductionServer. Why?

Question 2 - How can we configure DPM to filter out these PaaS/CloudFoundry/Bosh VM's so that they do not reach the DPM system?

how to move Hyper-V virtual backups to different DPM server

$

First off, I want to say that I've spent a large amount of time scanning the forums and internet for a solution to my problem with no luck. Here's the situation, as best as I can describe it:

We currently have 2 2012 R2 DPM servers.  Let's call them DPM1 and DPM2.     DPM 1 was originally, before my employment here, setup as a primary DPM server backing up a Hyper-V HostServer1 (server 2012 R2) that had 4 virtuals on it.  DPM was setup to backup JUST the virtuals on HostServer1, nothing native on the host itself (files, etc.)

At some point later on DPM2 Server was created, and I believe setup as a Secondary DPM server to DPM1.  (I'm not completely certain of this, as it does not appear to be setup that way now, but I can't tell for sure) but I believe it was because of the specific error I'm getting (more on that in a moment)

We want to start backing up the virtuals that are on HostServer1 using DPM2, instead of DPM1.   Again, before I started here, the previously person removed all content from DPM1 (protection groups and replica's of the 4 virtual servers that were on HostServer1, and uninstalled the DPM1 client from HostServer1.

Today I am attempting to add back protection of this HostServer1, but to DPM2.  I am able to successfully install the DPM client from DPM2 to HostServer1.   When I create a new protection group to DPM2, and navigated down the protection options, I can see the 4 virtuals running on HostServer1.    Here's the weird thing:

I can ADD 3 of the 4 virtuals to the protection group without issue, and successfully back them up!   However, ONE virtual, when I check the box throws this error:

"You have chosen to protect replicas on another DPM server (primary DPM server).   We recommend that you protect the DPM database of the primary DPM server along with the replicas.  Without protecting the DPM Database, you will not be able to recover the replicas of the primary DPM server in case of a disaster where the DPM Database and the replicas are lost."

It then throws this error:
"One or more of the selected data sources are already configured for protection on the primary DPM server.  When you switch back protection, the replicas of these data sources will be protected from the primary DPN server. (ID: 31162)"

If I continue through the PG setup wizard, I see that under the PG game, the DPM1 server name listed, and then this one virtual listed underneath it and the replica shows "unable to configure protection."

I have found numerous threads with this error, but the solutions (ranging from running PS scripts using Attatch-ProductionServer.ps1, to Remove-ProductionServer.ps1 from the primary DPM1 box, etc.) all have failed.   Some of these threads are similar it seems, to my issue, but most of the threads seem to be with an issue when the DPM client is on a protected server, instead of a Hyper-V box running off of a Hyper-V Host, as in my case.

I am either barking up the wrong tree, or not implementing these available DPM PS scripts properly.  Can anyone assist me in pointing out what I might be doing wrong, or if that's not the issue, point me in the right direction?

The odd thing here is that 3 of the 4 virtuals work fine when I moved them to DPM2.  Only one virtual (which doesn't have a DPM agent on it) throws this error.  Somehow, it's as if this particular .vhd has something tagged on it that's making DPM2 think that it's being protected somehow, by DPM1, which is not, or no longer, the case.   If it was a DPMDB issue, why are 3 of the 4 other virtuals working fine?

There may be missing information here that's causing this confusing; I'm not entirely sure all 4 were originally backed up by DPM1; but I *BELIEVE* they were.  it could be just the troublesome virtual was, not %100 certain of that.

There has to be some way to clear out the reference to DPM1 from this HostServer1, virtual, or DPMDB right?  Wherever the issue lies?  I would think it's in one of those.

We are not interested in having a Primary or Secondary server any longer, so if the fix somehow lies in clearing out all references the 2 DPM servers of "Primary vs. Secondary", that's fine too.  We want 2 separate DPM servers protection two different sets of Hyper-V hosts, unaware of each other.

Any assistance would be much appreciated!

DPM is unable to enumerate contents

Hi People,

I am having an issue where our file servers 1 and 2 have been moved from physical tin to virtual machines (two host cluster) using SAN CSV storage.

Now I recreated the DPM backups a for each server and the DPM backups were working fine.

Just last week on of the NICs on the Virtual Host server failed which was hosting the virtual switch. I have since moved the file server effected to another NIC. Since I have done that the backups have been failing.

I have removed the backup job and uninstalled and re-installed the agent, but when I try and recreate the backup job now, as soon as I try and drill down the server to the folders I get this error "DPM is unable to enumerate in <lots of folders>, Recycle Bin,System Volume Information Folder, non-NTFS volumes, DFS links, CDs, Quorum Disk (for cluster) and other removable media cannot be protected (ID: 38).

If I close the error box it lets me further drill down but then I get error "DPM cannot access the path D:\ because part of the path has been deleted or renamed (ID: 36)

I can close this error and DPM will show the drive letter but no folders underneath.

The thing is the folders have not deleted or renamed and can be browsed from the DPM server.

I am rather stumped on this one and quite worries that part of our SAN file store is not getting backed up.

Thanks

Si

Hi,

Getting below error while backing up VM on Hyper-V 2012 with DPM 2012 R2.

Type: Recovery Point

Status: Failed

Error description: DPM encountered a retryable VSS error. (ID 30112 Details: VssError: The writer experienced a transient error. If the backup process is retried, the error may not reoccur (0x800423F3))

Please suggest the solution.

Set-DPMGlobalProperty -KnownVMMServers - DPM Powershell command fails

Hello,

I must be over looking a step and hope that someone can point out something obvious I am missing.

We are running SCDPM 2012 SP1 on a Win server 2012 and SCVMM 2012 SP1 on another Win 2012 server.

I want to setup DPM to automatically protect our VM's when they're migrated around on our Server 2012 Hyper-V hosts.

The SCDPM2012 Server has the Hyper-V role added and has the SCVMM console installed. The SCVMM console on the SCDPM server and SCVMM server are the same version 2012 SP1 Version 3.1.6018.0.

The SCDPM agent is installed on the SCVMM server. On the SCVMM server I have granted administrator rights to the SCDPM server account.

On the SCDPM server I open an Admin elevated powershell and import the dpm modules. When I then try to run Set-DPMGlobalProperty –DPMServerName MyDpmServerName -KnownVMMServers MySCVMMServerName I get the following Error.

WARNING: Connecting to DPM server: MyDPMServer
Set-DPMGlobalProperty : DPM was unable to configure and start the VmmHelperService on the DPM Server.
Server name: MyDPMServer.
Exception Message: Time out has expired and the operation has not been completed. (ID: 33399)
1) Verify that VMM Console features are installed on the DPM Server.
2) To reconfigure the VMM server in DPM, use the Set-DPMGlobalProperty cmdlet as follows:
Set-DPMGlobalProperty -DpmServerName <DPMServerName> -KnownVMMServers <VMMServerName>.

+ Set-DPMGlobalProperty –DPMServerName schooldpm02.dundeecity.sch.uk -KnownVMMServ ...

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Hyper-V Backup failed but Hyper-V still shows Backing Up…

We have DPM setup on a Physical machine backing up 3-Node Hyper-V 2012 Cluster using Dell Equallogic SAN.  Today I noticed a Hardware Snapshot still sitting out there from 4 days ago.  The snapshot is also attached and mounted to the Node from which the backup started.  Digging deeper the VM that failed from 4 days ago has a “Backing Up…” Status in Hyper-V.   Rebooted DPM server and don’t see any running jobs in DPM Console.  Tried to Live Migrate the VM from Failover Cluster console then the Console failed and had to reload.

Any Idea how to stop the Backup from Hyper-V without stopping the VM?

Offline\servername

Using System Center 2012 DPM we have both 2008 r2 sp1 machines and Windows Server 2012 machines.  When viewing the Hyper V settings most of the machines appear as "Offline\servername".  At first i thought it was 2008 vs 2012 issue but we have one 2008 machine that appears "Online".  Verified that all the services are running for Hyper V and the each one has the SCSI controller present though not connected to an actual disk.  Do you have any ideas why one 2008 machine would appear as "Online" but not the others?

Thanks

is this supported or  Not????

DPM 2010 fails to backup virtual guests on a Hyper-V Cluster Shared Volume using hardware VSS provider

We have been battling with this problem for 2 years now and have raised calls with Microsoft and EMC both of which have not resulted in a resolution.

We have an 8 node CSV with about 40 virtual servers on it.  The Hyper-V hosts are Windows 2008 R2 SP1 servers with the Hyper-V role installed and the SAN is a Clarion CX3-10c and we are using the EMC 4.7.1 hardware provider for snaphots. The problem we have is that snapshots are not 'always' getting created on the SAN and the recovery points in DPM fail.  It often takes several attempts to re-run the job before it successfully works.

The MaxParallelBackups registry key is set to 1 on the DPM server so we are running jobs serially on each node and we have aligned all the VMs so the Hyper-V owner of each VM is the same owner of the CSV that those VMs have their resources on. We have done this to avoid any ownership changes to reduce the risk of failures.  This has had some success and it is not always the same servers that fail which gives this problem an unfortunate degree on intermittency!

There is no DataSourceGroups.xml anymore after I have tried to implement previously (it's effectiveness unproven though). We get a few days grace sometimes where backups are running with no problems but the longest run of success we have had is about 2-3 weeks which is our most recent run and it's cessation has led me to post this on the forum. Since Wednesday last week we have had regular failures with between 9 - 12 failures each night.  The annoying part of this is that we hadn't made any changes to either DPM or the Cluster which makes no real sense.

One thing I could do is split the Protection Groups so all the VMs on Hyper-V host1 are in one group, all the ones on Hyper-V host2 in another and so forth, however if anyone could advise me if this will be any help or not before I do it that would be much appreciated as I don't want to do this unless I have to in case I hit capacity problems (most VMs are in one large protection group at present)

Any help would be much appreciated (I have logs I can attach if anyone would like to see a sample of when the failures occur),

Thanks

Chris

DPM 210 does not always report backup to tape failures

$

I am using DPM 2010 to backup our servers including virtual servers on Hyper-V 2008 Cluster Shared Volumes.  We do have issues with snapshot failures on a regular basis (intermittent in that it is not always the same servers that fail) and it is with this protection group that I have noticed we have backup to tape failures which are only detected when I look in the reports and check the recovery point status.

I do see alerts for recovery point failures relating to tape backups but there are also a number of jobs that on occasions do not send an alert and are only detected when looking at the reports.

Has anyone seen this before or have any advice on troubleshooting this?

Thanks

Chris

Error 157 - Virtual Machine Somehow in 2 Protection Groups

I am Running DPM 2012 SP 1. I have a virtual machine that somehow ended up in 2 Protection Groups and now I cannot modify either of those protection groups. It just errors with the following error:

Removing \Backup Using Child Partition Snapshot\ServerX failed:

Error 157: Backup Using Child Partition Snapshot\ServerY cannot be added to protection because it is already a member of a protection group

ServerY is the VM that’s in 2 Protection Groups.

Please advise how I can properly get this removed from one of the protection groups.

I've tried the command shell with no luck.
