Do PreBackupScript and PostBackupScript still work in DPM 2016 (with modern storage)?

I am trying to run a PreBackupScript and a PostBackupScript for a protected Hyper-V virtual machine.

The vm runs on a Windows Server 2016 failover cluster and runs Windows Server 2016 as the guest OS.

I modified ScriptingConfig.xml to match what I have used before, including using instructions by Mike Jacquet in this forum on how to obtain the DataSourceName for Hyper-V virtual machines.

The virtual machine itself is named TFS2018 and using Mike's instructions I issued this SQL Query:

select ComponentName,caption from tbl_RM_RecoverableObject
order by cast (Caption as nvarchar)

A subset of the results:

ComponentName                                                     caption
C:\ClusterStorage\Volume1\Tfs2018\TFS2018.vhdx   C:\ClusterStorage\Volume1\Tfs2018\TFS2018.vhdx
A28F5AAC-9D57-4007-AC0A-9B77EACCBF20            TFS2018

I am using A28F5AAC-9D57-4007-AC0A-9B77EACCBF20 as the DataSourceName.

Is that correct?

The recovery point job runs ok, but it looks like the scripts are ignored.

Hyper-V host level protection

I have a Hyper-V guest playing fileserver role and which happens to play other roles as well (AD/DS, DHCP, DNS).

Further I have a (virtual) DPM server (dedicated machine with a physical disk passed-through) and I want to do use this to make host level protection of the fileserver/ad/ds/dns/dhcp machine with retention range of e.g. 15 rec. points /days).

For the fileserver part (one dedicated VHDX) I want to make backups with retention range of e.g. 60 rec. points.

Is this possible without massive duplication? (It seems like the host level backup is always includes all attached HDD's)

How can I calculate the Daily Churn %?

Hi,

How can I calculate the Daily Churn %, for DPM 1807 with MBS and Hyper-V protection (24 TB today)

Daily Churn %: This is the average churn on the protected data that DPM sends to Azure Backup every day. If I find how much data DPM sent to Azure compair with the size of all VMs is that theDaily Churn %?

<Data sent to Azure>/ <Size of all Hyper-V on CSV> - 10/24 = 0.41666 = 41Daily Churn%?

DPM 2012 - The recovery option 'Recover as virtual machine to any host' does not seem to work

$

Hi,

I am currently configuring DPM 2012 R2 in a hosted environment. As part of this I am trying to test the recover of a Hyper-V VM to a different physical host from its original location using the "Recover as virtual machine to any host" option. However when using this option all it seems to do is move the virtual machine from 1 physical host to another and does not apply the recovery point.

Current environment configuration:

3 x Physical Server hosts (all Windows Server 2012 R2) configured as a failover cluster (inc storage)

Hyper-V 2012 R2 role installed on all 3 hosts

System Center VMM 2012 R2 used to manage Virtual Machines

Steps used in the process are as follows:

1. In the DPM console select the Recovery option

2. Browse to the VM you want to restore

3. Expand the VM node and select "All Protected Hyper-V Data"

4. Select Recoverable item in the Path list

5. Right-Click and select "Show all recovery points"

6. Select the recovery point to restore and click Recovery

7. On the Review Recovery Selection page click Next

8. Select the "Recovery as virtual machine to any host"

9. Click Next

10. Click Browse

11. Select the Hyper-V physical host and clustered storage location for where the VM is going to be recovered to.

12. Click Ok.

13. Click Next

14. Click Next again

15. On the Summary page click Recover

16. The recovery process with proceed and restore the virtual machine to a different physical host but will not recovery the virtual machine as per the recovery point.

Can anyone please confirm if I am using the correct process or whether I am doing something obviously wrong in this process?

ILR of filerserver Hyper V vm throws up errors

ILR on a VM errors 99% of the time while loading.  The VM is a 3.5TB file server and after I click through the volume to the share, it may load a few thousand files and then error.  There is 26000 folders.  What’s weird is sometimes (not often) it will just click through the vhd folders and load all files as expected.  I would also love to browse the vhd that DPM loads in the DPM folder, but can’t access it.  I really want this to work as ILR especially is a great feature!

We are using DPM 2016 rollup 6 on a VM with 12 cores and 12 GB ram.  Other (smaller) vm's volumes load perfectly.

The errors: -

DPM failed to access the path NO_PARAM - ID39

DPM cannot browse the contents of the virtual machine on the protected computer...... - ID958

 Any ideas?

Many thanks.

Windows Server 2016 Essentials Backup Fails (Windows Server Storage VSS Writer - The writer's timeout expired between the freeze and thaw events)

$

Hi everyone!

I recently purchased and set up a Windows Server 2016 Essentials machine and want to perform regular backups.  These backups however keep failing.  I'm going to try to include all of the specifics below:

So, it fails at Sytem State and Bare Metal Recovery...

The error for System State and Bare Metal Recovery is: One of the system components is not consistent in the shadow copy created for backup.

The error for all of the others is: The writer's timeout expired between the freeze and thaw events.

This happens every time I try to do a backup...

I am backing up to an external hard drive.  When I start the backup, it advises that the external drive is included in the backup and asks me if I want to omit it (which is fine because that is a backup drive and shouldn't be backed up also).  I choose "Yes" and the backup proceeds.  The following morning though and I have all of these errors and a backup that, presumably, is worthless...

Has anyone seen this error or know how I can fix it going forward?  I backup important data separately, but would like a backup of the actual server too.

I have searched online, and while I've seen some discussion of similar issues, I haven't found an actual solution anywhere.

Thanks again for your help!

DPM back-end IO write size of 64KB... and page file usage...

$

Hi,

1a) I have been informed that the disk (DPM storage LUN) IO payload size (disk data transfer block size) (i.e. whilst reading/writing the VSS snapshots) is 64KB for both reads and writes.

1b) Or have I been mis-informed and what my source actually meant... is that the 'disk volume blocking factor' of the storage LUN for DPM is 64 KB, i.e. that the many GPT partitions which comprise used DPM storage space have a blocking factor of  64KB ?

1c) Or, are both statements above true?

2) If (1a) above is true, then is there a way to increase the IO payload (disk data transfer) size, and thus move more backup data per IO ?

3) I've also been told that a DPM server instance might also typically require a large amount of page file space.  Can someone explain why this might be the case?  Could this be overcome by providing more RAM?  Or is there something inherent in the design of DPM as an application that simply requires 'N' x RAM for page file space?

4) The requirement of a large amount of page file space would seem to indicate to me that the page file will experience lots of activity, and thus that the page file for a DPM server instance (physical or virtual) should itself be placed upon the fastest possible storage.  True?

Thanks.

Unable to backup VM's stored on a CSV

I have a 2 node hyper-v cluster with a csv shared between both nodes. I just set up dpm 2016 and installed the agent on both hosts and added the vm's to a protection group, but when I try to take the initial backup it looks like it is about to but after a few seconds it just goes back to "replica is inconsistent". I looked in the event viewer, but the only logs i can see that pertain to this is event ID 33223, which just says it failed and nothing else.

Kind of lost, still pretty new to hyper-v clusters as well as DPM so i could use some guidance, thanks!

DPM 2016 HyperVPagefileExclusions

Hi.

Has anyone experiences with the exclusion of VHDs from Hyper-V backups with DPM 2016? Does it still work? Are there any known issues with it? I try to exclude specific VHDs with Set-DPMGlobalProperty -HyperVPagefileExclusions "servername-Disk1.vhdx,servername-Disk2.vhdx", but it does not work.

Cant backup over dedicated network

$

I have a 4 node S2D cluster with hyper converged network.

Created a backup network and given it a dedicated subnet. 10.11 in my case.

I created a local hosts file on DPM pointing to all the sources i backup, which in this case is the 4 nodes.

On each node i created a host file pointing at the dpm server dedicated backup vnic.

All can ping.

when i have only the dedicated backup network in, all replica's fail.  When i add the production network in as a 2nd network..sequence 2, all backups get thrown over that network.

my question is does the cluster name itself.....also need a 10.11. network address as dpm is accessing the cluster to find resources.

i just cannot get this working after following every known guide.  i dont want backup traffic going over production network as its gives false positives on data transfer.

Thanks

Is it possible to backup a VM on multiple Disk ?

Hello,

I'm using DPM 1807, and I wanted to know if it's possible to backup a Hyper-V VM on multiple disk ? I tried to create another Protection Group, but I am not able to select a VM that is already in another protection group to create a secondary backup task on another drive.

Protect Hyper-V Cluster without VMM

$

In the past I have been trying to protect a Hyper-V cluster with DPM 2012 and 2016 but the backup jobs were failing continuously. I suppose this could be due to live migration that has been executed from time to time. Then I read this article which states that in order for DPM to maintain protection within a cluster, VMM must be used. Is this correct? I don't have VMM but would like to protect the VMs somehow, what is the recommended method in this case?

DPM 2019 Compatability

Hi there

Does anyone know if backing up 2012 R2 failover clusters is supported using DPM 2019. I am unclear on this after reading documentation I have found from Microsoft on this. I am hoping to buy a new server and would like to use Windows Server 2019 and DPM 2019 if possible.

The reason I ask this is because I have found that in VMM 2019 for instance you cannot add 2012 R2 Clusters or hosts into it as it only supports OS versions that are in the initial support phase not extended support which 2012 R2 is now in so you can only add 2016/2019 hosts or servers.

Cannot backup VM - The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect (0x8007007B)

$

Hello. We're trying to backup a VM running on a host (host-level backup). The operation always fails in DPM with the following error:

'An unexpected error occurred while the job was running. (ID 104 Details: The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect (0x8007007B))'

Consistency check/reusme backup always ends up with this error. Removing the protected member and recreating it fails too.

This is the only VM for which the backup is failing. It's running Linux OS. VM doesn't have any checkpoints (even the hidden backup ones). All VSS writers on the host are in stable/no error state.

Monitoring the DPMRACurr.errlog on the host gives some insight, but no hints on how to solve this:

(first there's a production checkpoint creation failure, which is to be expected, followed by successful crash-consistent checkpoint creation)

Access Denied - Trying to protect a VM stored on SOFS

$

Hello,

I am having problems trying to backup a VM, which is running on a Hyper-V Cluster and stored on a SOFS cluster (SMB).  This is a bran new DPM 2019 server install.  The DPM server is installed and successfully backing up file servers which have the DPM agent installed.  However, I am unable to backup VMs as a whole.  When I add the VM to a protection group, the initial replica fails.  And now, I also cannot perform a consistency check.  It fails with this error:

An unexpected error occurred while the job was running. (ID 104 Details: Access is denied (0x80070005))

Here's what I have already done:

  • Installed DPM agent on all Hyper-V nodes in the Hyper-V cluster
  • Installed DPM agent on all SOFS nodes in the SOFS cluster
  • Installed the File Server VSS Agent Service on all SOFS nodes
  • Added the following computer accounts to the "Backup Operators" group on all SOFS nodes (DPM$, HYPERV_NODE1$, HYPERV_NODE2$, HYPERV_NODE3$ and HYPERV_CLUSTER$)
  • Gave all the computer accounts mentioned above, "Full Control" access to the file share and NTFS permissions on the folder tree, where the VM is stored on the SOFS.
  • After making all of these changes, I restarted all the SOFS nodes and the DPM server.

I should mention that my new DPM server is running DPM2019, on Windows Server 2019, with SQL Server 2017.  My SOFS nodes and my Hyper-V nodes, are all running Windows Server 2016.

Does anyone have any ideas?
