Protection Group and HyperV cluster wont expand

$

Dear All,

I have a 4node HyperV Cluster on CSV volume, where each node runs Windows 2012 R2. I have SCDPM 2012 R2 UR 6. I have installed DPM protection agent on each of my HyperV hosts and the status shows OK. I have restarted each hyperv host after agent deployment. When I try to create a protection group my hyperv cluster is listed, however the cluster wont show any VM. The list is empty.

Any ideas why is this happening? I cant find any errors, the list just wont expand.

Thank you

DPM 2010 ID 104 Details: The specified network name is no longer available error

I have on VM I can't get to backup anymore and I'm getting the same error everytime time I run the consistency check.

An unexpected error occurred while the job was running.  (ID 104 Details:  The specified network name is no longer available (0x80070040)).

I updated the DPM server and the agent to the latest rollup so it is current and that didn't fix the issue.  I have rebooted both systems since that update as well.  This VM was backing up fine until about a month ago.

DPM 2012 R2: VSS error "the bootfile is too small to support persistent snapshots"

$

I'm encountering an error when protecting a VM. DPM event log indicates that "the bootfile is too small to support persistent snapshots".

  • The VM is on a Hyper-V 2012 R2 cluster.
  • All integration services are enabled.
  • SCSI controller is present.
  • No errors in the state of the VSS writers.
  • Other VMs on the host back up successfully.
  • VM backup issue occurs on any host within the cluster

Any other thoughts/ideas on resolving this VM-level backup issue?

Quick simple question with regards to backup of SCVMM and HyperV clusters

I tried to make a protection group to backup my VMs, I was expecting to find the SCVMM "machine" (cluster object) in the machine list, but I did not... (that's what we used in another scenario with Veeam).

Do I add the cluster object from the machine(s) running the SCVMM service? Or/And do I add all the HyperV hosts manually?

For my previous experience with VM backups (Veeam) we just installed the VMM console on the backup server, and "added" the VMM "server" to the backup software (which then installed proxies on all the hosts).

(This current cluster runs SQL and VMM on two nodes).

DPM 2012R2 always sends full VM when create recovery point

Hi,
I have problem with some VM backups - DPM often sends full VM, but at same time other VM backups sends only changes.

My environment:
Host - W2012 R2, Tiered storage spaces (Storage Tiers Optimization - Disabled)
VM: W2012 R2 Files server (defrag - Disabled); W2012 R2 SQL server; Linux web server

Kind Regards,

Can only restore to network location

We use DPM for backups of file share and VM's (used as webservers).

When restoring a file from the file share I can select to restore to original or alternate location. But when restoring a single file from one of the VM's the only option is "Copy to network folder".

Is this because of some setting or just "by design"? It does not make sense to me.

DPM 2012 R2 - Item Level Recovery error when Descending into a .VHDX only 2008 Server

$

I need to remove and reinstall my DPM 2012 R2 RU6.

Everything works fine. Then I tried the Item Level Recovery. On every 2008 Server I receive the same Error:

PM cannot browse the contents of the virtual machine on the protected computer xxx.xxx.ch. Item level recovery is not supported in the following scenarios.
1. The VHD contains a dynamic disk inside the guest OS.
2. The VHD has no volume.
3. HyperV role is not installed on DPM server.
4. Automatic mounting of volumes is disabled on the DPM server.

1) Try enabling automatic mounting of volumes using mountvol on the DPM server to preform item level recovery.
2) Otherwise perform a full restore of the virtual machine.

ID: 958
Details: Internal error code: 0x80990F4E

All this Hyper-V VHDX Server are on a 2012 R2 Cluster.

For Testing I have a Standalone HyperV Server. On this every 2008 Server works fine.

All 2012 Server works fine.

Any Idea.

Thanks in advanced for any Tip.

When i create a Protection Group with Folders/SQL Database works fine like it should.

When i create a Protection Group to Backup a Hyper-V on Host got at once after created Error:

"DPM failed to communicate with dpmserver.domain because of a communication error with the protection agent. (ID 53 Details: Not implemented (0x80000001))"

Windows Firewall on Host and DPM Server are both off. No other Error/Warning in Windows Event Viewer.

Have no idea, need your help.

DPM and CSV backup (Change block tracking or ntfs change journal)

Hi,

i've been looking into DPM2010 and DPM2012. Does DPM utilize ntfs change journal or Change block tracking on and incremental backups.
Somehow I think it doesn't. I keep seeying the CSV go into redirected mode and seeying the whoel vhd file being read.

Is there a backup solution that's smarter with this?

An unexpected error occurred while the job was running. (ID 104 Details: Access is denied (0x80070005))

We have a two node failover hyperV cluster running with CSV. We can backup hyperv servers on one server, but not on the other. Network is working fine, and we can backup normal files from both servers. SCDPM server is W2008R2 with SCDPM 2012R2 UR6, both clients are 4.2.1312.0. A virtual server can be backuped on the first server, then we live migrate it to the other server. The same virtual server then fails to backup.

We get this message in the SCDPM console:

Recovery point creation jobs for Microsoft Hyper-V \Offline\server on server.cluster.domain.com have been failing. The number of failed recovery point creation jobs = 1.
If the data source protected has some dependent data sources (like a SharePoint Farm), then click on the Error Details to view the list of dependent data sources for which recovery point creation failed. (ID 3114)

An unexpected error occurred while the job was running. (ID 104 Details: Access is denied (0x80070005))

And at the same time, we get in the system eventlog the following DCOM event 10006 message:

DCOM got error "2147942405" from the computer xxxxx.domain.com when attempting to activate the server:
{DA6AA17A-D61C-4E9C-8CEA-DB25DEA52A95}

We backup only to disk. Normal backups of other servers are just working fine. The is no sharepoint farm on the server.

I tried changing the MSDTC rights (http://www.eventid.net/display-eventid-10006-source-DCOM-eventno-272-phase-1.htm), but that didn't solve it.

http://serverfault.com/questions/563088/dpm2010-windows-2012-dcom-errors-communicating-with-all-agents suggests to remove the node from the domain, and back again. This is not something I want to do because it might break the hyperv cluster, and I don't know how to fix that.

Do you have the same problem ? What actions did you do to solve this ?

DPM2010,2008 R2 Clister, 2012 R2 vm

recently came across an issue in an environment where we used DPM 2010 to backup Windows Server 2012 Virtual Machines running on Server 2008R2 Hyper-V cluster. The only option available in DPM for the VM’s was “Backup Using Saved State"

I’d like to use the online backup option: “Backup Using Child Partition Snapshot”.

After some digging I found a forum post which had a reply from a Microsoft employee that suggested to create the following registry key:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\SystemRestore
REG_DWORD ScopeSnapshots 0x0

Still not working.

Im new to DPM and any help will be appreciate.

Thanks

DPM backup replica instead of original VM

Hello,

I have this situation:

1. Several standalone (no cluster) production Hyper-V server with VM's on it. Lets call them original VM's.

2. Backup server, with Hyper-V role on it. One VM on this server is DPM. And on this server is target for VM replication of original VM's (replica VMs)

DPM is configured with VMM for support for live migration.

I configure DPM to protect original VM. But if there is replication of VM on backup server, backup job fails with error that there is no DPM agent on backup server. If I install DPM agent on backup server - it back up not the original VM, but replicated VM.

One workaround is to uninstall VMM agent on backup server, but i need real solution.

How to tell DPM that it should backup original VM, but not the replica ?

Hello,

I currently have the problem that my DPM Backup of 2 of my VMs is not working.

The VM is a 2008 R2 and the Hyper-V is a 2012R2. The newest Integration tools are already installed.

Hi, we are trying to backup a vm and get a dpm arror, the agent is intalled on the host, after looking at the event logs of the VM i found this:

The description for Event ID 8229 from source VSS cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.

If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.

The following information was included with the event:

Snapshots in Hyper-V 2012r2 can't be deleted

$

Hi,

we have a big problem with Snapshots, which are done by DPM 2012r2 over the Hyper-V Manager.

Our System Center Data Protection Manager backs up our whole system. Some Virtual Machines only via a Cluster Network Snapshot over the Hyper-V Manager.

Now we have the problem, that some VMs still have Checkpoints/Snapshots from the DPM-Backup and we could not delete it. But it'snecessary to delete it! If we click right on the Snapshopt/Checkpoint the options that are shown: Settings, Export, Rename and Help. There is no chance to click delete or remove!

In the eventlog is no information about that. In the moment it is very bad to reboot the Hosts or restart some cluster services! The VMs have to run and there is no time for downtime now.

Is it an error of the Hyper-v Manager? Or anyone a solution for this problem?

I hope that somebody could help me!

best regards

Event ID 999, DPM console restarts

Hi,

DPM console started restarting for some tames per day. It started after VM moved from one host to another (not cluster)

I resolved problem when found this VM and did CC.

And this problem happens not first time.

Where I have to look for problem ?

Or maybe its a bug of DPM-VMM Helper Service ?

My configuration:

DPM2012R2 on W2012R2

VMM 2012R2

All Hyper-V servers W2012R2

How do I maintain backups after moving VMs from a 2012 cluster to a 2012R2 cluster?

$

I've DPM2012 R2 and it was backing up VMs in a Win 2012 cluster. All good. New Windows 2012 R2 cluster created. Storage detached from existing nodes (iSCSI SAN) and presented to new nodes. Imported VMs, with both register (retain ID) and some copy (new ID). But if I want to back any of them up, it seems to see them all as new machines. I just want to continue on as nothing in the VMs have changed, just the name in DPM i.e. vm.oldcluster.domain whereas it's now vm.newcluster.domain. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

DPM 2012 SP1 Beta - Causing Server 2012 Hyper-V Cluster hang / ISCSI problems

$

Hi All,

First of all, I know it's a beta and these are the perils of being an early adopter, but I've got a serious problem.

I've upgraded our production Hyper-V cluster to Server 2012. The setup is a 4 node cluster running CSVs on an ISCSI SAN with MPIO via dual gigabit Ethernet networks. The SAN storage is provided byOpen-E DSS7 and replicated to another server in a different building.

Post the upgrade everything about the cluster seemed stable and to work as expected - live migrations etc all working. I then turned my attention to backups, and I discovered that Server 2012 wasn't supported by DPM. Fortunately there is a beta of DPM 2012 SP1 which adds support for Server 2012, unfortunately there is no upgrade path from the beta to RTM of SP1. Not wanting to upgrade our production DPM server to a beta, I installed a copy of DPM 2012 SP1 beta on a VM to provide a stopgap backup solution for VM level backups of certain machines that couldn't be backed up in other ways. I realise that running the backup server on the same cluster / SAN as the stuff that's being backed up is an odd thing to do, but this at least serves to provide snapshots, SAN replication provides resilience, and like I say, this is a stopgap.

Then I started noticing problems. First symptom was that on starting / rebooting VMs, sometimes other VMs would hang for perhaps 30s - 2m, people would start complaining that SharePoint had gone unresponsive etc. However, they would come back to life in a minute or two.On a couple of occasions we came in in the morning to find a number of VMs off or paused (backups ran overnight). Both of these problems occurred only when the DPM server was turned on. I thought the issue might be general load on the SAN, having both the backup server and the machines being backed up living on the same CSV / hardware. I moved the DPM server to a different ISCSI box and put on aggressive throttling (200Mbps) to try to reduce load, but the problem continues.

The event logs on the Hyper-V cluster suggest I/O timeouts to the SAN at the times of the backups. Lot's of event ID 1069, 1205, 1146, 1230,  (various cluster resources failed). The interesting one I think is 5120 Cluster Shared Volume 'Volume5' ('VOLUME NAME') is no longer available on this node because of 'STATUS_CLUSTER_CSV_AUTO_PAUSE_ERROR(c0130021)'. All I/O will temporarily be queued until a path to the volume is reestablished.

Is anyone else using SP1 beta to successfully backup a 2012 Hyper-V cluster?

Is anyone seeing the same problem?

Is it likely that this is a problem with SP1 beta, will it be fixed at RTM?

Any suggestions for a stopgap solution?

I think I might try setting up a test physical DPM server to check the issue isn't in someway related to the fact that the DPM server sits on the same cluster it's backing up. I'm also happy to consider the problem could lie elsewhere i.e. with the SAN storage (this was upgraded from v6 to v7 at the same time as the 2012 upgrade, but as soon as I tell the vendor that the problem relates to running a beta of DPM they will be pointing fingers at that.

Thanks,

Tim
